The days had been long, and the nights had been longer...since arriving back to the Academy to continue her sixth year of studies. After a fantastic, memorable summer, Hallie found it oddly difficult to return to the school she had grown so found of. How could anything between its walls match what she had did over the past few months? With a sigh, Hallie leaned against an old oak tree while peering out over Celestial Lake. It was here that she usually found solace and peace, and she was hoping that within just a few minutes, she could feel just that.
Her mind wandered with memories of her summer trip with her grandmother. They had traveled by train across the country, making stops along the way at some of the most famous and beautiful natural scenic views. The Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, and the Grand Canyon in Arizona had definitely been her utmost favorites. After seeing the country the way that she had, upper New York just seemed to bland compared to everything else.
After a few minutes of nothing but the sound of cicadas buzzing through the trees, Hallie chewed on her lip before leaping to her feet and quickly shedding her outermost layer of clothing. After throwing her school clothes down into the grass, she looked down at herself, smiling slightly at the light bronze glow radiating from around her bathing suit. Who knew that she could have caught a tan so quickly, and only from sitting out in the sun for a mere hour?
She breathed in the late-afternoon air deeply, then set her sights on the shoreline of the lake, immediately making a bee line for the water.

The young girl needed to get out of the school, there was too many voices in there. Too many people feeling too many things, out was good. By the lake was even better because it reminded her of home. The sea breeze blowing through her sunny blonde hair and the water splashing up against against the rocks slashing up against her face. It was like home... But there was also part of it that weren't like home. She wasn't alone here. There was someone out in the lake, the same girl she had seen every year since coming here.
"Miss Mary you are still out there? Why don't you come with me. It's much warmer over here." She called out to the girl dressed in all white who was out in the water. She could handle this. It wasn't a million voices assaulting her all at once, it was just one poor lost soul that she finally might be able to help.
I can't... it's too cool. There's too much water...
She always said that every time, and there was nothing Annabel can do about it. She just didn't want to leave the water, it was too much for her and too cool. "Miss Mary..."
I can't... it's too cool. There's too much water... But it was broken by another girl who was tossing her clothes to the ground and was now in a swimsuit. She was going swimming? Right now? But why? Doesn't she know there are people out there? People that have drowned and not found their salvation? "Excuse me..." She said softly moving over to the girl who was now booking into the water. "I would be careful if I was you... there are souls out there that cannot get free. You should be careful or you might join them." Annabel blinked and tilted her head as she felt the girls emotions, her longing for summer to come back and desire to travel again. "Why don't you want to be in school right now? Don't you like it here?"

Someone was making far too much noise for this time of day. He blinked open his eyes, and saw a lot more of the sun than he had been expecting to. After he let himself recover from the shock and pain of staring straight up at the sun, he stood up, shaking the leaves from his already disheveled uniform. It seemed that he'd managed to make it to nearby the lake last night, when he finally gave up on sleeping inside in a room with a bunch of strangers. That was just plain stupid, really, he didn't know any of them. He could quite easily have woken up dead. Waking up half blinded was a much better option, in his opinion. Besides, it hadn't rained, and it had been quite nice outside.
He stretched, and walked straight down to the lake to splash some water on his face. To properly wake up, there was nothing like fresh, cold water running down your nose. He totally missed the other people already around, and just stumbled down the small incline until his entire face was submerged. He stood there in the lake, knee-deep, holding his breath for as long as he could. Which turned out to be a little over a minute twenty seconds. He really would have to improve that. Emyr stood upright again, walked out of the lake, and sat down in the sun to dry. "Morning!" he said to the other students. Though for what reason, he wasn't sure. Being a new student in your sixth year could hardly be all that commonplace.

The Potions work she had attempted to finish the night before obviously didn't get completed after her interaction with that horrible James Novak. Her face was still slightly reddened from his slap, but she had brushed a bit of powder over it to where it was barely noticeable. Deciding to sweep the night's events under the rug, she shoved her hands into the pockets of her uniform skirt as she stepped out onto the grounds. Her classes were finished for the day, and the refreshing breeze from the lake and the gentle tones of the waves crashing down on the bank were calling her name.
It shouldn't have surprised her to see other people crowding about the lake's shore as she approached seeing as the weather hadn't shifted to being cold just yet. It was still warm and pleasant outside, and Delia's eyes scanned the area to take in who all was visiting. There was a redheaded girl in the water swimming about and another boy who was in up to his knees and greeting them with a "morning." Morning? Was he not aware that it was late afternoon?
The other girl there, though - the blonde - was someone Delia actually knew. Annabel-Lee was in Aqua House with Delia, and the two had numerous classes together over the years. They knew each other enough to be considered borderline friends, she supposed, and she was aware of the other girl's being a medium. When she heard the blonde begin to talk about people in the water, though, Delia stepped forward and took the girl gently by the shoulders. "Alright, Annabel, enough of that, yeah? You're going to scare these people," she said in a gentle tone, offering the girl a smile as she led her over towards a fallen tree trunk for her to sit. "How was your summer, anyway? Good, I hope?"

Samuel finished the last drag of his cigarette, then flicked it onto the pavement before crushing it under his heel. He was on the school's back terrace, leaning against a column, feeling annoyed by how warm it still was. After all, cold-weather clothing was much more elegant: long wool coats, fedoras, scarves that perfectly matched his crisply pressed shirts. As it was, Samuel had ditched his suit jacket, rolled up his shirtsleeves, and loosened his tie. His Prefect's badge, however, gleamed on his chest.
And then something caught his eye ... a different kind of gleam, the gleam of the sun sparkling off of perfect red hair, and Samuel knew exactly who was out next to the lake. Hallie Keating, the girl he'd had his eye on for years. The girl who smiled at all the other boys but remained infuriatingly coy toward him, which only meant she returned his attraction. It only meant that she wanted him even more than she wanted those other pathetic suitors. It had been a long summer with no Hallie Keating to gaze at.
She was just gorgeous and fascinating.
Of course, annoyingly, other students gathered around her as he started to make his approach. That was all right, though. Annabel-Lee, the terribly strange, possibly crazy girl. Cordelia, the oddly brash girl with the blue hair. Neither of them was suitable. Only Miss Keating was.
Oh, and some other, unfamiliar male had arrived. Must be a new student.
"Hello," Samuel called out as he arrived at the cluster of students. "Good day, Miss Atkinson, Miss Thatcher ... Miss Keating." His eyes darkened almost imperceptibly as he nodded down at his crush, allowing his gaze to flicker subtly up and down her bathing-suited frame. He offered her a cocky half-grin before responding to the demands of politesse by turning to the unfamiliar male and extending his hand. "Hello. I'm Samuel Smythe. Are you a new student?"

The cool tinge of the water made the tips of her fingers and toes tickle, which in response made a pleasurable shiver roll up her spine. Smiling to herself, Hallie fisted long strands of her red hair into one hand, then bent herself backwards until she was submerged underwater. After a moment or two, she pulled herself back up, only to be startled by the sound of another girls' voice ringing in her ears. She visibly shuddered lightly, then turned, noticing the blonde who was still near the shoreline. Wiping away access water from her face, Hallie frowned in confusion and slight anxiety as she turned her head to look behind her as the girls' words filled her head. Could she be any more creepy? Hallie had never been one to judge someone based on first impressions, but being told that she would join the "undead" would more than likely leave some kind of mark on her.
"What are you talking about?" She asked Annabel, only to shift her gaze to another girl with blue hair strolling down the small hill and coming to the aide of the blonde. Hallie watched the exchange without a word, then smiled at the girl she silently remembered being called Delia guided the blonde away a bit. With a smile, Hallie made mental note to approach the blue-haired girl and express her thanks.
Her eyes hastily shifted once more, first to the new boy of the school, who had casually greeted her with a simple "morning", but before she could even so much as respond herself, she caught wind of a tall, slightly built upperclassmen, who practically seemed to float to a nearby tree where the other girls had planted themselves. Instantly, she felt her cheeks burn with warmth, and she was almost positive her face was slowly turning to the same color of her hair.
Hallie waded through the water as easily as she could, making quick glanced towards the upperclassmen every now and then. She had known of Samuel Smythe, and his ability to charm the pants off other girls at their school, and some of her own friends had told her of his attraction to her, but she had always brushed it off as just silly rumors, and nothing more than silly rumors. Why would any boy, especially one that was older than her, be interested in what she had to offer? Sure, she had experience in flirting and toying with some boys from time to time...but Samuel? Oh, he did things to her that she had never felt before...and those feelings happened simply because he looked at her.
She listened carefully to Samuel and Emyr's exchange as she gathered her clothes, feeling eyes watch her every move. "Mister Smythe," she nodded curtly, shooting him a coy smile while bunching up her shirt between her arms. "I hope you are well. And you," Hallie quickly shifted her attention to her fellow student, rubbing a hand at her burning, blushing cheek. "Finding your way around here?"

The girl was very confused by what she was saying and she could understand. Maybe she should have not said anything but she was worried, she didn't want the girl to get hurt. She didn't want to see another person become a sprite and be doomed to drown in the lake day after day after day. What a sad way to live your afterlife when you are suppose to finally be free. But then a Boy came up and she was taken aside, feeling something she had never felt before. And it was odd and it hurt in all the wrong ways and he had no words for it. Morning! He was so happy and yet there was something so broken in him... And she took a step over to him about to ask why he felt this way when Cordelia came in and pulled her aside.
"Oh no Delia it's okay! I just don't want to see them hurt. Oh I'm sorry I didn't mean to scare anyone I was just trying to be helpful." She always felt bad whenever she scared people, she never meant to and always hated when it happen. The girl look down and bite her lip before looking back up shrugging some and nodding. "I guess I do like being home, mostly because of the ocean. But I would rather say here." Because being home meant she had to pray for hours on end, try and keep her soul clean from the devil mark that was rooted in her. And of course she knew that her father words couldn't be all true. Why would the Devil take hold of a tiny blonde girl that helps the dead? It didn't make sense. At least being in school had welcomed her and made her feel a little least like like a sin.
Samuel came over and she looked down before giving a small smile and a wave. The boy thought she was a freak, and wanted nothing to do with her and she knew that beside all she wanted to do was talk to this new boy, figure out all she can about him because he just felt so different, his emotions were so... strong and yet damaged.
She pulled away from wherever Delia was guiding her, ignoring the words that Samuel and the redheaded girl where saying, and walked over to the new boy. "Hello I'm Annabel-Lee. You are new aren't you?" She asked with a smile closely watching her words to make sure that she didn't say anything that would come across creepy.

"You know, I'm not sure that I could possibly be a newer student if I tried," he replied cheerfully, shaking the confident gentleman's hand (a gentleman, of course, meaning someone who didn't beat their- Emyr couldn't quite bring himself to think the word. The two times he'd tried to say it previous his mother had beat him quite soundly) and smiling at everyone else assembled. "I could claim that I was finding my way around, but I could also claim that I could fly unaided. Both would be quite untrue." Emyr had, quite some time ago, mastered the art of both sounding clever and seeming harmless. They were some of his most versatile and well used skills.
"I can't say I know of many schools that are mixed sex back home. Apart from the obvious one, of course. Not that I've ever seen it." He was rambling, and that was not a good way to fit in and remain unnoticed. Neither was sleeping outside, but that one he couldn't really help. "So, what do you guys do for entertainment. I mean, apart from talking to ghosts, swimming or making awkward attempts at flirting." Wow, well done Emyr. Great job fitting in. You've probably just insulted two of the four people you've actually spoken to since getting to this damn school. This was why you didn't go to Hogwarts. They would have booted you out in weeks. By popular vote.
"Seriously though. While this place looks lovely, I can't figure out what you do for fun. Classes don't go all day, do they? Wait, did we have classes today?"

Annabel was suddenly apologizing to her for trying to be "helpful," and while she didn't have the faintest clue as to what a medium went through on a daily basis, she was fully aware that the blonde girl beside her had nothing but pure intentions. "No, no, you don't need to apologize," she told her with a shake of her head, laughing lightly as she did so. "I know you were trying to help, but I don't know that everyone else here knows that is all." The girl then began to talk about enjoying her time home, and Delia smiled when she referenced enjoying the ocean. It must be a similar feeling to Delia's love for the mountains, she guessed. "Well, I hope you enjoyed the sand and the waves at the very least."
The girl pulled away from her to approach the unfamiliar boy just in time for Samuel Smythe to appear, cocky as ever. The two of them had been relatively civil with one another throughout their shared years at the Academy, but she was never his biggest fan by any means. He was arrogant and cocky and... Well, that sounded similar to James Novak when she really thought about it. "Smythe," she greeted in return, offering him a light nod in place of any sort of hug or handshake or curtsy.
A question about what "fun" activities could be done at the school caught her attention as she turned away from the arrogant Fuego, and she looked back to the newcomer. "We swim sometimes, go into town on weekends, or you can play quidditch if you're interested in sports," she told the boy with a light shrug, but she instantly started snickering at his statement about awkward flirting. Oh, how obvious it was that Smythe and the redhead had a thing for each other. How neither of them managed to go for it - especially Smythe - she wasn't sure, but then she heard a rather bizarre question.
"Wait, did we have class today?"
Did they boy seriously sleep all day and miss classes? Not a very smart move, but she simply laughed a bit after picking her jaw up off the ground. "Yes, we had classes today. And they run all day unless you have free periods," she informed him. But after realizing she hadn't introduced herself, she revealed her name to the boy. "Cordelia Thatcher, but I go by 'Delia' mostly. Seeker for the Aqua House."

Samuel returned Annabel's smile - after all, he was unfailingly polite when it was appropriate to be so - and spared a brief glance and nod for Delia. Overall, his method of engaging with other people was simply to return what was offered to him.
And then Emyr spoke. Well, Samuel seemed to have wasted his politesse on this ... person. For some unknowable reason, the girls seemed charmed, but Samuel was simply annoyed with Emyr's dismissive attitude. He released the handshake, lifted his chin ever so slightly, and cocked an eyebrow. "Well, there are parties for those of us who refrain from insulting people we don't even know. Somehow, I doubt you'll be inconvenienced with any invitations." With that, Samuel turned away, reaching for his pack of cigarettes and approaching the lovely Miss Keating. Was it just him, or was she blushing? What an excellent start to a conversation.
"I am quite well, thank you. It is pleasant to be back at school, though. My parents are not the most interesting people to spend my time with. And you, Miss Keating? How was your summer?"
He lit his cigarette and blew a few smoke rings, carefully aiming them away from Hallie's face.

Hallie flashed a genuine, sweet smile at the new student as he spoke. She listened intently, all the while feeling not only the heat in her face intensify, but in her body as well. Was it really that incredibly hot outside, or was it just her? If it was, indeed her, she definitely needed to work on how she carried herself.
Her eyes flashed towards Cordelia for a moment before turning back to Emyr and nodding her head. "She's right. Classes are every day...and sometimes," she paused to click her tongue, "they are a little strenuous. So, that being said, if you ever need help studying or with an assignment, I'd be more than happy to assist," Hallie told the newcomer with another soft smile. Altova she questioned how much free time she would actually have, she really did want to help him out as much as she could. Being a new student was hard, but trying to catch up on sixth year studies in a matter of weeks? Oh, what both a pain and a hurdle.
Hallie ever so slowly turner her head and attention to Samuel, who was now creeping ever so closer to her, and she couldn't help but stare at his mouth, and the cigarette that held itself between his lips. Was it completely awful to secretly admit such a horrible habit was attractive...at least, to her?
She laughed softly at his words, then casually rolled her shoulders back and folded her hands behind her back-a habit that had been instituted into her at a very young age. "My summer was absolutely fantastic, thank you for asking. I got to travel with my grandmother across the country. We traveled by train which was quite the experience. Although," Hallie paused, smirking a bit, "she spent the majority of her time picking up suitors while I just sat back and watched. It was quite amusing. I felt like I was babysitting her."

"I guess that true." Annabel said as she looked down at her feet. You know she sometimes forgot that other people didn't see the world she saw the world. Only a handful of people walked through life seeing and feeling the thing she felt, and she forget that she shouldn't just speak outright about those things because others might not like it or understand. But she also hated keeping it all bottle up, she hated the fact that she couldn't talk about it with other people because they thought she was a freak, or something to be feared. She spent her whole life being feared by people; her father and now the people in the one place that was suppose to accept her. Maybe this mark.. this curse of gift or whatever you want to call it... maybe it really was something to be feared. Maybe she was never meant to belong anywhere... Not in this world or the muggle world.
So where does she go then?
Annabel let out a sigh and bit on her lip before returning her attention to the new boy at hand. He had introduced himself as Emry, and interesting name for a interesting boy. "Oh are you named after the Arthurian legend? I only ask because of your accent. You are from the UK correct?" She asked hoping that was something normal people would say but she had the sinking feeling that it wasn't.
So she ended up letting the boy and Delia talk as he commented on her talking to ghost and that got her to pipe up. "They are not Ghost. They are spirits that are trapped here but need validation before they can go! Ghost have unfinished business they need to sort out themselves and anyone can see them." Oh dear maybe she should have kept her mouth shut and not say a thing...
Annabel swallowed and looked down as she fixed he bow in her hair before sighing some. Again back to just listening to Delia and Emry talk because at this point she didn't even want to try to open her mouth to speak again. She would probably just mess everything up.

Of all of the people here, it rather seemed like the blue-haired girl was the most helpful. Emyr guessed that if you were going to go with blue hair, you probably had to have a number of attributes to balance it out. Else you'd hardly survive in a place like this. "Quidditch isn't exactly my thing. Never really got into it, to be honest. But at least the town seems like there would be a couple of things to do there." Emyr took a break from politeness again to address Samuel, who clearly needed to be 'addressed' and not merely spoken to. "My apologies, good sir. You see, I have spend a good deal of my time travelling, and meeting rather a lot of new people, and one finds it quite easy to recognise people for the broad categories they're in. You hardly seem the type to associate with a vagabond, and I hardly felt the need to return your feigned respect for the purposes of wooing the scarlet haired young lady here. I've always been better at crashing parties than being invited to them, anyway."
"Classes every day. Well, that is a change of pace. I've made a fantastic impression on the teachers by being absent for my entire first day." Emyr, struck both by a desire to irritate the other boy and to show him up, gently took Cordelia's hand and just slightly brushed his lips on the back of it. "A pleasure to meet you. I've met a lot of people, but blue hair on someone so close to my own age is something of an anomaly." He nodded politely to the red-head, genuinely grateful for the information. "I may take you up on that one. Though I would hate to be a burden on you. I don't think I caught your name?" he asked, somewhat hoping to repeat the action, but without the slight inconvenience of actually having to grab someone's hand. Samuel Smythe, meanwhile, seemed intent on having a private conversation amid a group of people. Hardly the action of a true gentleman. "Truly your parents are unlike yourself then."
Slightly shockingly, the ghost-girl- Annabel, Delia had called her- guessed the origin of his name with ease. "Yes, actually. My mother thought that being the King of Brittany was a fine goal for a young man. She didn't quite take into account the royal lineage required for such a position, though." Emyr was a bit taken about by her confident distinction between ghosts and spirits. Clearly Annabel was knowledgeable on the subject. "Truly? I was under the impression that ghosts themselves were spirits. Is the difference something to do with their visibility to us common folk?"
