Suki arrived right in front of the music store like she had told Knight that she would. It had been a busy couple of days for her, enough not to visit The Red Velvet Room speakeasy. Lately she had to help in other departments in the hospital, often doing surgeries. Now, a lot would not trust a woman ate her young age even, to perform serious magical and non-magical surgeries. But as far as the blonde medical genius could say, they didn't have a choice, she was one of the few that even dare think about doing open surgery. Yeah, her fellow coworkers definitely did have their doubts on her, being a woman in the twenties with her gender and age... Well, a lot of people would doubt you.
But she showed them.
Suki waited around for a bit, not even bothered by the fact that Knight might have forgot or had stood her up. Her senses told her he was coming, for some reason. Maybe she's a seer for these kinds of things. Despite not seeing the man she just met for days, she had already placed her trust on him. Mostly for the fact that maybe because she gave him an earlier opportunity for his job. So in a way, he kind of owed it to her to buy her a saxophone with her money.

A sharp crack echoed out from the alleyway next to the instrument store, preceding the impeccably dressed Knight's appearance by mere moments. The only hint of his hangover was a slight redness to his eyes. He smiled broadly at Suki as he walked up, and offered her his arm so that they could sell the pretense of them being together. "Whatever you do, don't make a comment about me looking 'grown up' or anything like that. I think people saying things like that speeds it up."
Knight honestly hadn't realised that he was late to the shop, after all, musicians are rarely known for their punctuality. He didn't have any concerns about their deception being pulled off, the absolute worst that could possibly happen would be that the cashier recognised Knight and thought that Suki was his latest- which was rather what they were going for, so nothing wrong there. "You ready?" he asked, hoping that she would be as cool under pressure as he was.

Suki looked up hearing footsteps, seeing the man's smile. His immediate comment making her chuckle, "I was going to comment about that, good call," she mused. Suki, she had a long way to go, she was still pretty young despite her fast-rising position in her job, but that was simply because she was talented in the healing arts, after all. You got some bad case of dragon pox? Go to Suki. Common cold? Suki can whip up some potion for you. Some venomous sting or bite, Suki can medic the shit outta that. STI's? Yeah, go someplace else. Suki was a miracle worker, and mostly it was hard-work in late nights rather than natural talent that really made Suki the healing patron that she is. Of course, with that, she wasn't really trusted by her male colleagues, often being on the back end of being scrutinized and things are often blamed at her. Oh being a woman sucked.
"Yeah, ready," she said, looping her arm to his. "How are we going to do this, Knight?" She didn't know the full plan on getting her a saxophone, but as far as she knew, if they did it right Mamie Smith and Her Jazz Hounds could move over. Of course this involved lying, something she really tried avoiding, but then again... Suki was technically lying to Knight and lying came easily to her since well... Well, she's an Antonucchi. She was definitely cool under pressure, might be even better than Knight much so. Of course, she had her fair share of dangerous situations, especially if it involved her brothers and her uncle.

"There was way too much melancholy last night than I was prepared for, I'd rather forget about the passage of time for the moment." If that didn't make him sound old, he didn't know what would. Merlin, but the idea of going gray and spending the rest of his life reading crumbly books and complaining about the youth these days sounded like hell on earth to him. Much better to go out in an alcoholic haze in a bar somewhere, surrounded by music and drunk strangers, he thought. Long term plans weren't his forte, beyond 'get famous' and 'earn money'. It was nearly impossible to actually plan your actions when you were a professional musician, anyway, you went where the work was and that was it.
"We go in, you pick the sax you want, I pay for it, we go. Simple." Like any more of a plan was actually needed, why would the shop owner scrutinise the decision that closely. Hell, even if it looked like they were buying it for her no one would comment. It was hardly an uncommon event for a pretty young lady to take a shining to a musician, and then get an instrument so that her consort could teach her how to play it. No one would bat an eyelid, not for a second. And beyond that, complicated plans tended to fall to pieces quite quickly. "Sound okay to you?"

It made him sound old, to her at least. She didn't even know this guy's age, for all she knew he could be forty for all she knew and he'd have a spell to charm himself to look... well either thirty or twenty, she could juggle around that idea later. Age to her seemed pretty useless and something so... human. It was just something to track ourselves with so we know as an estimate when we would die. Only humans really cared about dying this much.
"Okay, it sounds simple and okay," she didn't know how she felt about simple, Suki wasn't the simple kind of girl. She was raised to prepare for the possible mistakes and consequences, and simple didn't really fit a complicated but sure-fire back up plan for whenever something wrong might happen. But she was trying this whole 'simple' thing out, though it still sounded shady to the mafia lady. She tugged him towards the inside of the music shop, kind of excited already.
See, this is why they say women are always complicated.

To keep up appearances, Knight opened the door for Suki and let her enter first, into the wide room filled to bursting with instruments of all makes, shapes and sizes. It took a lot of effort for Knight to not make a beeline for their pianos, but they were here for saxophones, not pianos. The two of them wound their way amongst various stringed instruments, the woodwind section too before finally reaching the brass. "Which one takes your fancy, m'dear?" he asked, the picture of a British gentlemen out treating his girl. Inwardly, he was still trying to scrape together ever bit of brass knowledge that he actually had, so that the attendant would not see through their ruse. Though it was more likely than not that the attendant would think he was trying to scam her, and play along anyway.
He knew enough about saxophones to be able to tell off the cuff which were the cheap, rubbish ones only there to make money off of saps who didn't know the first thing about music, and the genuine article. However, he wasn't nearly good enough to be able to choose from amongst the good saxophones, so he let the saxophonist do the choosing, subtly directing her towards the beautiful saxophones that would really let her shine. That way the attendant would take neither of them for fools, and wouldn't waste their time with a piece of metal fused to a strip of wood. "Anything stand out to you darling? I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you were to have a try of a couple of them, they'd hardly want to sell us a poor instrument."

Suki had entered, rather sashayed, as he opened the door for her, every poise of a woman of her stature. She had wide eyes, looking around in awe. She had seen what was inside of the store from the outside, but never really been inside a music store before because well, she really didn't have a valid reason to go inside. Inside was just so... full of instruments, that's basically how she was going to describe it. She didn't think she'd ever go to one, but here she was, about to get herself a saxophone - for herself. Now look at that.
Suki looked around, "'M still looking," she murmured, smiling as he led her to the beautiful saxophones. There might as well be literal stars come out her eyes as she looked over the saxophones. It was obvious that even though she didn't have her own instrument, she had a keen eye for saxophones. "Right, I mean... you'd try them or I try them?" she looked up at the man, awkwardly not getting the point. "Merlin," she whispered to her friend, "So many saxophones in one place," she said a bit childishly, her brows furrowed. She was still in awe about everything it was almost watching a puppy.

It caught Knight off-guard just how adorable Suki was as she perused all of the saxophones on offer. He knew that she was excited about the whole affair, but he hadn't expected this level of unbridled joy. If there had been any doubt at all as to whether she was a true musician or not, this cleared it up instantly. She was definitely a cat, and the thought made him extremely happy. He might get his band after all. A trio of piano, singer and sax could easily take any scene by storm, given how brilliant they were. Assuming that Suki was any good, but that wasn't even an issue in his mind.
The assistant finally stopped acting cool and disinterested, and approached the two of them to start the hard sell. Knight was thrown enough that when he beamed up at the assistant, it was entirely genuine, as was the affection on his face when he looked at the burgeoning musician. Maybe, just maybe, if growing up involved moments like these, he could deal with them. "In case it wasn't obvious, we are interested in buying a violin." Knight couldn't help it, part of him enjoyed the forced laughter that sales assistants always respond to any joke with. "You try any of them that you like. I can't tell you which is the best instrument for you, dear."

Suki looked at the assistant, after making love eyes at the saxophones, snickering discreetly at the somewhat forced laughter that the sales assistant had in response to Knight. She looked up at Knight, pursing her lips. It wasn't like she didn't know how to distinguish good from bad, but she also knew she wasn't professional enough and was hoping he'd at least help her, or give more input. But that wasn't the case, apparently. Damn, pianists. Always going to only do their thing.
She looked back at the saxophones, trying to distinguish which one was the best suited for her among the others. She looked at one of the saxophones, looking at the shape and the structure of the instrument. To one such person it may all look the same, but to Suki, even as an amateur, she knew there were differences. Huge and tiny ones, the only thing was that she couldn't catch some of the differences in each. But then a particular one caught her eye, and it was obvious that she was intrigued and a bit stunned by seeing that particular saxophone. It was the look fellow cats give to the right one.

It was pretty obvious that she was annoyed that he wasn't going to help her pick out the right instrument, but in reality doing so would be as bad as giving birth to a child for someone. For a real musician, this was a bond stronger than being picked by any wand. This was choosing your lifeblood, your closest companion, something that the unknowing would say was like a lover, when no lover could possibly compete with the affection that you felt for your instrument. Especially your first one, the first one that you could call your own. To take that away from her would be possibly the worst thing he had ever done. Knight took a step closer to her and whispered "Trust me, you don't want me to guide you in this. You'll thank me later Suki."
Sure enough, mere moments later her eye was caught by one of the saxophones. Knight decided that he probably shouldn't tell her that even if she picked one that wasn't perfect it wasn't all that big a deal, leave the magic to her until she discovered that fact on her own. After all, he was a pianist. It's not like he took his piano to every gig that he did, it just wasn't feasible. He'd played so many different pianos, and what really mattered was how good you were. Any audience could tell if you were terrible, it took a good ear to tell if the instrument itself was poorly made. Assuming it was in tune, of course.

She almost whined at his words, but it was true. Suki just didn't know enough yet, or how this moment for her was like giving birth to a child, may that child be blessed with Suki's looks or being struck by lightning to inherit whomever the father's face was. In the long run, yes. She will thank him later for this moment. Besides, once she caught the sight of her lucky longtime partner, all was forgiven because she knew. She didn't even have to try it to know it was the one. But suppose anything could happen, she asked the assistant if she could try the saxophone next to it in hopes she wasn't just eyeing the one next to it just for nothing. She wanted to try some of them at first.
The assistant probably guessed or not that Suki and Knight weren't here for Knight to buy a saxophone. It didn't take a genius to know that Suki was taking this way more seriously than she should if it was for the man she had come with. The assistant handed her the saxophone carefully, and then Suki placed her lips on the single-reed mouthpiece and decided to play a couple of notes. No, it didn't feel right. She pulled out and gave it back, realizing she played in front of the assistant, confirming that she knew how to play instead of blowing foolishly like any other woman would have if they tried to test it.
She sheepishly smiled at Knight then at the assistant, "My love here," she tugged on his arm fondly, "Taught me a few notes, he's such a wonderful man, right?" She smiled tightly at the assistant, before playing her part and kissing Knight's cheek to play her part of being his side whore. But then a thought passed her mind. No matter how much she denied it, Suki always had a part of River in her, and that part was having a mischievous trait. It was just so random, but then again mischief wasn't about timing. Suki was more like River than she'd like to admit...
"Come on, Uncle, lets look for more saxophones," the assistant's jaw dropped.

To keep appearances up, Knight made sure to gesture that the assistant was to do whatever Suki asked of him. Most would assume that they were here to spend his money, as was their whole plan, and would defer to his judgement. However, he wasn't going to hamper Suki in her instrument choosing, not in the slightest. Keeping out of important things was something of a skill of his. He watched carefully as she intentionally chose the wrong saxophone, and wondered what gambit she was trying. Whatever it was, he'd be practically forced to play along. Hopefully it wasn't too complex, or at least a role he'd played before. Apparently the plan was to intimidate the assistant, or at least make it abundantly clear that neither of them were going to be easily fooled by any half-assed sales tactics. "She's got quite the natural talent, don't you think? Should shock the family the next time they meet her, beautiful women with so much raw ability are few and far between." He was quite impressed with that, not a word of it was a lie. Of course, it wasn't his family he was talking about, and he doubted very much that her brothers knew she was quite as skilled as she was with it. And she'd be far better by the next time they heard her. Practice was key. Now what the hell were they doing? He sighed inwardly, reminding himself that he'd promised to follow along. Before following, he shook his head and laughed to the assistant. "My girl has something of a... vicious sense of humour."

Suki had the urge to snicker as she walked a little bit further to look for more saxophones, looking at each very carefully. Some were flashy, some barely kept together, some were okay. But none were as good as the one from before, sadly. She kinda sorta heard him telling the assistant about her talent. Suki couldn't help but smile, not because he said she was beautiful, but because she liked hearing that she had talent. She loved playing the saxophone, she hoped she was any good at it and she was, well Knight thinks she does. And he was a musician, he must have meant it of course, Suki considered him... a professional.
She asked the assistant for the next acceptable-looking saxophone, this one seemed more promising than the one she played, but not as good as the other one. She was handed the saxophone and played it a bit more roughly this time, shaking her head, "Not this one, my love. My, my, does it ever get this hard just to get a single instrument?" Suki had asked Knight, sighing a bit as she gave back the instrument. She didn't expect it to be this hard, mostly because she thought Knight would help her and that saxophones looked generally the same. The blonde couldn't be anymore wrong in that guess, picking an instrument was so hard.
She looked around, there wasn't many selections of saxophones compared to the others, but there was a wide selection of them indeed. She had tried out another one once more and still didn't settle for it. She nodded at Knight, walking over back to the perfect saxophone, "I wanna try that one," she pointed to the saxophone that was destined for herself. The assistant looked at Suki as if she was crazy, but the assistant handed the saxophone to her and Suki thanked the assistant. She started to play it as the assistant started explaining the quality and the legit branding of the saxophone, claiming it was made for true musicians and was overall a great instrument due to the precise and careful process of making the fine saxophone. And about how expensive it was, really expensive for its quality.
Suki knew it was the perfect one as soon as she played it, sweet notes were played and once she pulled her lips out, she smiled. "We'll take this one," she said with a confident smile.

It was quite clear that Suki was having a blast of a time making this as difficult for him as she possibly could, and so he resolved to be of even less help to her in choosing the saxophone. Two could play at that petty game, and few people could manage the heights of pettiness like he could. The shop assistant was growing more and more confused about who he was actually pitching to, and seemed to now be content to try and sell anything to either of the two of them. If they kept this up, he'd start thinking that they were just playing him, and didn't intend to buy anything at all.
The assistant opened his mouth to respond to Suki with some pointless quip, but Knight beat him to it. "It's like trying to hand-pick a child. Such a thing is not to be rushed, or you will regret it later on." He idly wondered if he would be any good at the saxophone, he knew that many musicians were dismissive of pianists, so perhaps there was a whole set of skills needed that he simply didn't have. He might give it a shot at some point, if they made it big, if he didn't spend all of his time on the piano. It kind of felt like cheating though, in a completely inexplicable way.
"If the lady wants that saxophone, then she will have that saxophone. No huffing and puffing about it, good man." The assistant's eyes widened, he'd met enough rich people to know that unnecessary compliments were a sign of growing anger. Knight had as well, hence his fantastic impersonation. Before she so much as opened her mouth to confirm that this was the instrument for her, Knight already knew. It simply clicked, in a way that no one but the two of them could possibly have been able to tell. "Shall we work out the finances, sweetheart?"

Suki looked at the assistant, she didn't let anyone know she was kinda annoyed by the repetitive 'good quality' and 'professionalism' that came with the saxophone. Suki even thought about having some men she knew take care of this person later. But of course, she decided it was too petty and besides, it wasn't really nice to do that. Suki was far too important and rich to care about an assistant's wellbeing and rudeness anyways. Not really worth the trouble.
She sighed, looking at the assistant and giving the saxophone away so the assistant can package it up and whatnot. Suki sashayed and walked over to Knight, "Finances, we don't even know how much it costs. Apparently it's expensive," but Suki left it at that. She had money for expensive things, she had money for very expensive things. How much did the assistant think her dress was worth?
"Gee, picking a child could be so hard, like it's even relatable to handpick your own child, rather than ending up with a surprise box which is more relatable, let's be honest," Suki had said sarcastically to Knight, opening up a side of her coat, pulling out a slightly thick stack of ten dollars. She counted ten, pulling it out and keeping the rest in her pocket. "It's a magic guess, but it should be enough," Suki murmured as she gave Knight the money. It was extremely impressive for a woman like her to carry that much money around, even more so a solid one hundred she pulled out easily from her coat and gave it to him just for a saxophone. The saxophone definitely has to be in good quality for that.
