Duilio didn't say a single word as Pietro showed them to their new apartment, chatting pleasantly with Mariella the whole way. It was quite obvious that Duilio was angry and upset and should be left alone for the time being. He offered a sort of grunt once they had arrived, glowering as he watched the stranger kiss his sister's hand. Pietro said he would be at a place called the Red Velvet Room in case Duilio wanted to drink with him. Duilio grunted again as he lit a cigarette.
Maybe he would go. Maybe he wouldn't. Right now he felt like a complete mess, a pathetic excuse for a man. Never before in his life had someone made him feel so small and weak, but Enzo ... well, he was a cold-hearted bastard, wasn't he? Duilio hated the fact that he was now bound to such a person. He hated the fact that he was even in this ridiculous country with its chilly air and its cloudy skies and its English contracts.
Maybe he should just go to sleep. Yes, that would probably be the best choice. He would go to sleep. He started to make his way toward the bedrooms.

They had settled on working on their friendship before anything else, and it was nice because the two of them seemed to be getting along. Pietro was a sweet man who loved the fact that she was smart on top of pretty which was good. She had no problem dumbing herself down if she needed to but that did mean she liked too. No it was nice that they could just talk and she wouldn't have to be too worried about everything she said. So this seemed like it would take care of itself in time which was good.
Duilio on the other hand... she didn't know where to even start with him. They came back to the office and she could tell the second the door opened he was upset. Then this whole time they had been with Pietro he hadn't said a word to either of them. Now that Pietro was gone and it was just the two of them he didn't even look at her.
Even when he was the angriest with her, he still looked and talked to her. So what happen to make her brother so upset? He started to make his way to the bedroom and Ella; who was already pulling off hr jewlary, said "Are you going to tell me what's wrong or just ignore me for the rest of the time we are here? Because it's not like I am some of your only family left or anything. And it's not like I still love to care about you at all..."

"Not like I am some of your only family left ... "
Right. Mariella, and the monster in the fancy office, and the creep he had promised her to. Maybe they should have just stayed in Sicily. He could have hidden Mariella and accepted his own death like a man. Instead, he'd fled. Coward.
He turned to his sister, expelling smoke in a long, angry stream. "Listen, Ella, that Enzo is not a good man. I do not want you speaking with him except when it is absolutely necessary. Do not try to be friendly with him. He is not at all like Father. Do you understand?"
She deserved to be warned, after all ... and he didn't want his own whimpering cowardice to get back to her in any way.

He did finally turn to look at her, blowing out smoke and giving her a stern glare that made her feel like a child again. But she was no child and her brother had no right to be telling her who and who not to trust. After all Enzo and Pietro were far kinder to her today than her own brother was being. They were quick to make her feel welcome and wanted, and here was Duilio making her feel like maybe it was he she could no longer trust. Maybe he was telling her this in the hopes that she would come back to trusting him.
"But why? They were good kind men who took us in when no one else would have! Just because you have issue accepting help from anyone does not make them untrustworthy." Yes alright she was growing slightly short with her brother but this was a long time coming.
She had tried to forgive him, tried to do what god would want and forgive and forget... She tried to stay loving and supportive but he was making it so hard. It was just the fact that he was still acting in the worst ways, letting his temper cloud his judgement and being rash and harsh without thinking thing through.. her brother never thought anything through. "Well he remind me a awful lot of Father and he was very kind to us so I will be friendly to him and if you don't like it you do not have to listen.

So this was going to come back around to him? To his faults? This had nothing to do with him "having issues accepting help!" This had to do with the fact that, the moment she'd left the room, Enzo had threatened him into signing contracts that he couldn't fucking read. That wasn't something that a real family member should do. But of course, for Mariella, it all came back to Duilio and his problems with other people.
And why wouldn't it? He was an idiot. He'd gotten their entire family killed. But ... his complaints against Enzo were still valid. They were, damn it!
Brows drawing together, Duilio stared hard at Ella. "I said nothing about them. I do not know how Pietro spoke to you while you were out of the room. I am speaking of Enzo, and you were not there the moment that he changed from something sweet to something frightening. I do not believe he has our best interests at heart. However, if you do not wish to listen to my opinion, then I do not understand why you have asked me to speak with you. Please make up your mind. Do you wish to hear my opinion, or do you not?"

"You know what I wish Duilio?" She said her eyes glaring at her brother. It was breaking her heart to be doing this, to be speaking to him this way and feeling this way about her brother... He twin brother. The man who had been there for her since day one. He helped her read and write and taught her how to protect herself just in cased and promised to always protect her from the world and now...
"I wish you would think before you speak or do anything! I wish we were still home in Sicily with mama and papa and my beloved. I wish you listened to everyone more when we told you to stop what you were doing! I wished you listened to me!" Her eyes were swimming with tears as she said each word. It hurt to do so... it hurt alot but it was also it was true. If he thought more, if he listen to her they would not be here. They could still be home and safe and sound and not having to deal with people he didn't trust.
"I asked you to speak with me because I still care about you and still love you, but if you are going to act this way and not listen to me again and just belittle what I believe like a child then I shall not speak to you anymore." She said inhaling deeply. There was no backing down from this, no sinking back into being the perfect little lady who just nodded and smiled. She was standing her ground on this one... no backing down now.

He squeezed his eyes shut, very hard, holding in a lungful of cigarette smoke until it had completely dissipated and there was nothing to exhale. This conversation was pointless. They were not even speaking about the same things. He supposed that this was her right, that she hadn't yet castigated him for his idiocy, but he wished it could have come at a time when he was ready for it, when they were both discussing the same thing.
"We're not," he finally ground out between clenched jaws. "Do you think I do not wish the same? Do you think I am not filled with regret every minute? I would love to be back home, in the sun, with our family. But that is not what I am asking. I am asking what you wish now, what is realistic. It is a different question."
She continued to speak, and he couldn't keep his free hand from curling into a fist. What the hell did she want from him? "I am listening to you, Ella! I have belittled none of what you have said! You are the one who is not listening to me. All I said was that, after you left, Enzo changed, and I do not think he is trustworthy. But if you do not want to hear what I have to say, then do not urge me to talk to you. I did what I needed to do. I got us here, and I got you safe, and I sold myself into slavery. Do not spit on my sacrifice. I know I have ruined everything. I do not need you to remind me of that fact."

With each of his words she felt like she was becoming smaller and smaller. She could handle having anyone else speak to her this way but not Duilio. Ella loved on her brother, and relied on him so much. He always was there when she needed him, always willing to just listen to her and take the time to understand her. Now here he was just yelling at her and she didn't remember a time they have ever fought this bad and she just wished she could go run away like a child and hide in Vicenzo arms and cry and he would talk to Duilio and make everything better. Because that was what her big brother, he fixed Duilio mistakes.
"I... I'm so-," She couldn't even get the word out because no she wasn't sorry. She had said exactly what was on her mind and even if Duilio knew all this she felt like it still needed to be made known by her."I just..." She was starting to stuggle with her words, the desire to speak her mind was strong but she didn't want to upset her brother more. Not to mention this wasn't the path to forgiveness. Forgive and forget that is what God would have wanted.
"I just wish..."
Why was she the one trying to say sorry? He should be the one that is sorry! He killed our family, he killed everything about her chances for a happy future with the man she loved more than anything. Now she might never be loved... married but never loved and never touched by him because he too is grieving over a dead love.
"I want..."
Forgive and forget, that is god's will. He is your shepherd in these hard times and will walk beside you, carry to down the path of forgiveness and yet it was so hard and she just...
"I wish you where more like Vincenzo... Then we wouldn't be here."

"I wish you were more like Vincenzo. ... Then we wouldn't be here."
Why did she have to put a voice to the thoughts that had been running endlessly through Duilio's head? Did she think she was telling him something he didn't already know? It hit him hard in the chest, and it hurt, and, without a conscious thought, Duilio lashed out, slapping his sister hard across the face.
"I AM NOT VINCENZO!" he bellowed.
A split second later, he realized what he had done. His hand stung, and he stared down at it, then back up at Ella's face. Taking several stumbling steps backward, Duilio ran into the wall and used it for support. Oh, no. No, no, no, no, NO! He couldn't believe himself. What had he just done? He hadn't struck Ella since they were little children at play, shoving each other down and striking with tiny child hands that had no real muscle power to drive them. Now they were adults, and he was strong, and he had hit her very hard, and there was an angry red mark on her cheek and ... oh, God, no, he couldn't believe himself!
"Ella," he gasped, eyes wide and full of terror, "I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean ... I'm so sorry. Please, Ella ... I'm so sorry."

She was about to turn and walk away because there was nothing left to be said. She was sure she just said the most hurtful thing she could have said to him right then and there. But there was no time to react because just then she was slapped right across the face and hard. Her brother... he just... he just...
"Ella don't cry. Please stop crying I didn't mean it. I'm sorry." A tiny six year old boy said reaching under the table with chubby sticky little hands. What he was reaching for was a tiny girl with blond curls and her knees pulled up to her chest as she hide herself from him as best she could. There were tears in her eyes and she moved farther away from the boys hand.
"You hit me Duwy... and it hurt alot." She said sniffling and wiping her nose. Of course he didn't mean to hit her, they had been fooling around the house, playing tag in places they were often told not to. And while she was running by him his hand and come up and caught her face.
"I know Ella and I'm sorry. I'll never hit you again." The girl lifted her head up, looking at him with blue eyes still brimming with tears and her cheeks raw and blotchy from all the crying.
"Promise?" She asked watching the boy nod as she finally crawled out towards him, finding herself pulled into a hug which was able to get her to smile again.
"Promise."
Her hand was on her cheek, eyes filled with tears a her brother stumbled around on his words. Just as shocked as she was with the act he committed. She had always know that men have the right to hit woman as they please but her brother? Her own brother hitting her... after he promise all those years ago to never hit her again? She couldn't even get any words out just stood there with her hand against her cheek before swallowing and walking into the bedroom. Closing the door behind her.
