"No one can hurt you without your consent."
River's words had struck a chord with her then. Perhaps, in a way, he was right. Maybe Aedan could hit her psychically, but he really didn't need to hurt her emotionally. No, she was in control of that; of how she felt. Every day she learned how cold, hard, and strict her boyfriend was; but then also, she had learned a lot about herself as well. It was in her best interests to be the girl that Aedan wanted her to be...even if she didn't necessarily want to be that kind of girl. Her job now was to finish school, and then, be a pretty little wife that did nothing but stand by her husband and look pretty. It definitely wasn't a hard job, and she prayed she could succeed in it without upsetting anyone.
Shaking her head, she cleared her throat and stepped over to the nearest desk, where her eyes glazed over the various questions on the piece of paper. After a while, Hallie slowly lifted her head and looked back to River, curiosity slowly filling her mind.
"Professor," she asked, her eyebrows furrowing a bit. "Do you think what happened to Gawain was right? He was killed..." Hallie said stoically. "And Maureen...she's still, recovering."

River looked at Hallie as the question arose. He was there next to his brother when he killed Gawain, he saw the light leave out of his eyes as quick as a switch. It was boring, if River were Pietro, he would have definitely made a show of it. Exposing the students to his gruesome, brutal, and cold nature. Of course he thought it was right, especially since if Gawain had gone further, he might have killed his brother - No, that was silly. Against them, a measly Irish man trying to repay his debt? No match for either one of them, really.
His reply was cold and fast, "If he wasn't killed, my brother would have died instead," was his simple answer to that, leaning on his own desk to look at the redhead, "Good for Miss Brady then," River simply said. Everyone should be glad it wasn't River who killed Gawain. It would have been quite a traumatic experience for everybody. Even such innocent ones like Hallie Keating, like Serafina Latini, some other students. But then again, no one was really innocent in this war.
"Now enough of that, focus on your Transfiguration homework, read me the first question," River snapped at the girl as his usual tone was.

Her brows threaded together in both anger and confusion as River answered her question. Shifting her weight to one side and leaning towards the desk, curiosity enveloped her as his words flooded her ears. So, he wasn't ashamed of what had happened to Maureen, or Gawain? That bothered her tremendously. Neither one of them was obviously perfect, but to her, they were good students and young people who deserved a shot outside the school. Maureen was soft and caring, and yet, she had been targeted. Gawain, to Hallie, had been the whole package. If it hadn't been for Aedan, she would have tried her hardest to impress Gawain enough to get him to go on a date with her, and now, he was gone...as if he had never existed. To make things worse, it was Pietro Antonucchi, the Head of her house, that had murdered him. Beforehand, Hallie had always thought positively and warmly about the light-brown Antonucchi instructor, but as of now, she knew in her heart that she would never be able to forgive him for what he had done.
Although River had startled her a bit by instructing her to proceeed, Hallie did not; instead, she kept his gaze on him as her own eyes glazed over with hardness. Perhaps it wasn't smart to speak to an instructor in such a tone, but her dislike of the Antonucchi family could no longer just be in her thoughts.
"Professor," she said again, her voice more tense, low, and serious this time, "are more of us going to suffer, here...at the school?" Hallie asked, keeping her eyes on him pointedly.

River rolled his eyes at that, "Well currently you're suffering in my class right now with a 'Poor', as most of the school," River snapped further, avoiding the question that wasn't in her position to ask. River then moved to write more stuff down the board, "Now as I said. Read. The. Question." River had said this in a threatening tone, the threat definitely was said in the air. Seriously, if she wasn't going to read the question, River would definitely stop playing nice and blow up.
An exasperated look was on his face, his hands itching to grab his wand. But instead, he turned around and glared at the redhead, oh he was going to break his promise to Nixie promise so quickly with this one, he figured. But then again, he already broke that promise yesterday when he had to smack someone for getting such a simply question wrong in his class, so there was that. The need to blow up was so real, he was breathing raggedly, slightly tightening his fists. River paced around, waiting for her to answer the question.

Her instructor's demeanor changed in a matter of seconds, and that change startled her enough to erase the hopes of any kind of answer from him. Perhaps she was being foolish; asking such specific questions from the sworn enemies of the O'Brien's certainly was not going to have a positive outcome, and she wanted to shudder thinking about what would occur if Aedan ever so much as found out about her curiosities.
She cringed visibly at River's tone, then nodded, quickly looking down to the text book before her. This, her schoolwork, was the reason she was in his classroom in the first place. To aquire aby other kind of knowledge wasn't her place to do so, and slowly, she was learning that.
"The question asks about imagination and creativity," Hallie finally replied, glancing at a now tense, hardened River. She paused, chewing on her lip in the process. "Is a lot of creative ideas needed for conjuring things? What about imagination?"

River was still in his sort of transition state of becoming moody, though the fisting of his hands loosened and his mind was of less destructive thoughts, his breathing reverting slightly back to normal. That was better, definitely better. River looked at the girl after a while, now able to stand looking at her. Why a teaching job, why can't he be like Suki? Life outside a school taking care of the weak and dead? Why did he stick to teaching? Oh, that's right. Uncle Enzo was more accessible, duh.
She had read him the question, his face in a half-scowl, the rest he was quite stoic. "Imagination, do you remember what I said in your class?" He didn't wait for an answer because he knew she probably didn't pay attention, that's why she's here, right? "Imagination is a big part of the Transfiguration process in which it allows the caster to be able to materialize what they desire of the object they are trying to transfigure, exactly down to detail," he paced a bit in a way to calm himself as he started teaching her what she needed help on, "Furthermore, the imagining process is what your magic builds up on to transfigure said item, so a lot of mental control is needed in Transfiguration. Simple things often get the most errors in spell-casting due to the fact that the imagination of the caster always leaves out the detail of said simple item, causing errors such as missing parts of the thing the caster is trying to transfigure, wrong color, disfigured shape, and so on," he was mostly rambling on about this subject. It really showed how passionate he was in Transfiguration, really. He was a prodigy at the subject, and whenever he really taught, his passion often shows for the subject even though he's an asshole about it.

A part of her couldn't help but want to turn and run on her heels back out of her instructor's room. Hallie took clear notice of the way Professor Holland spoken to her; his tone, while informative, was always angry, and she was wise enough now not to push anyone out of anger...or, at least try her hardest not to. Would River tell anyone of her curiousity that she had vocalize about? She shuddered at the thought of any members of the O'Brien family knowing of her questions. If they had found out she had socialized with an Italian, surely some sort of punishment would be imminent in her future.
Clearing her throat, Hallie casually flicked her wand through the air, aiming at nothing in particular. "I see," she replied. "When one gets talented enough, are they able to conjure almost anything?"

River looked at the redhead and her question, his lips pursed. It was an odd question, and he didn't expect that from her. He thought about it, finding himself staring at his board again, the small writing blurred. "Good question," he murmured to her, thinking about himself. There was no doubt that River was talented, a prodigy. But simply he didn't just get his talents by just sitting, he practiced. But when he practiced during his youth, even then his spells weren't at their most refined even if he was particularly good back then.
"No," River had answered her question, "Its not talent that conjures anything. It is one's ability that conjures anything, talent just secures your ability to do it, but it doesn't do anything but make whatever you conjure up to be better. If you know and are able to wave your wand to use magic, that in itself theoretically makes you able to conjure up anything. You can conjure up anything, if you think about it. If you have talent, you're just are more than likely to be able to do it on the first try," River had told her in detail, his stoic face was harder than ever, but his voice showed purposefulness in what he was explaining. "Read the next question," River ordered.
